Human rights defender Oleg Orlov fined in case on discrediting Russian Army

In Moscow, a court fined Oleg Orlov, the co-chair of the “Memorial” Centre for Defence of Human Rights, 150,000 roubles, recognizing his article as discrediting the Russian Armed Forces. That was reported by the Telegram channel of the “Memorial” Centre for Defence of Human Rights.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that a hearing on the Oleg Orlov’s case was held in the Golovinsky District Court of Moscow. A public prosecutor requested the court to find Oleg Orlov guilty and fine him 250,000 roubles. A defender stated that the article on discrediting the Russian Armed Forces, under which the human rights defender was being persecuted, contradicted the Constitution of the Russian Federation and the international law.

The reason for the charge against Oleg Orlov was a Russian translation of his article published in the French publication “Mediapart” posted on Facebook* on November 14, 2022. The article condemns the special military operation (SMO) in Ukraine.

*On March 21, 2022, the Tverskoi Court of Moscow banned the activities in Russia of the Meta Company, owning the Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, in connection with extremist activities.
