Swiss authorities find Ali Bataev's return to Chechnya quite safe

Ali Bataev, a native of Chechnya, was denied protection in Switzerland, whose authorities, contrary to the advocate's arguments, have concluded that Bataev's deportation to his homeland is quite safe for him. The "Vayfond" human rights organization has treated the Swiss authorities' conclusion that the human rights situation in Chechnya has improved as unacceptable.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 14, 2023, it became known that Swiss authorities regarded that Ali Bataev, who had arrived from Ukraine, was in the country illegally and intended to deport him to Russia. Bataev went on a hunger strike because he was sure that he would be persecuted in Russian by Chechen authorities.

Protests against Bataev's deportation to Russia were held on July 21, 2023, in Switzerland, Austria and Germany, and on July 24 – in Germany and Sweden. Zainap Gashaeva, an activist of the European Peace House, has stated that law enforcers are putting pressure on Bataev's relatives living in Chechnya.

Swiss authorities have treated Chechnya as safe territory where human rights are not violated, Zainap Gashaeva has added.

Lea Hungerbühler, an advocate, has appealed to the State Secretariat for Migration, telling about the situation with human rights violations in Russia and, in particular, in Chechnya. As examples, her appeal cites cases of administrative and criminal cases initiated against pacifists, as well as Zarema Musaeva's case. However, these arguments failed to convince Swiss authorities, the "Kavkaz.Realii"* project reports.

  • Religion experts explain motives for militants’ attacks on synagogue and temple in Dagestan

Ayats (verses) of the Koran, references to which were left by attackers at a synagogue in Derbent, are interpreted by the extremists to justify their confrontation with Jews and Christians, Leonid Syukiyainen and Dmitry Mikulsky point out. The experts suggest that the date of the attack on the Orthodox temple was chosen by the militants because of the Christian holiday celebrated on that day.
