Dagestani MPs appeal to Putin concerning problem of Irganai resettlers

More than 50 Dagestani MPs called on President Vladimir Putin to pay attention to the problems of residents of villages flooded during the commissioning of the Irganai hydroelectric power plant in 2008. Villagers have been seeking compensation during a long time.

In a response from the Russian Ministry of Economic Development to residents of the villages flooded during the commissioning of the Irganai hydroelectric power plant (HPP) in 2008, it is noted that the budget is short of money to pay compensations in 2024-2025.

Let us remind you that the residents of the flooded villages have not succeeded in getting compensation since 2008 due to inconsistent actions of the republican and federal authorities. On December 25, 2022, the cassation court sided with the villagers and obliged the authorities of Dagestan to pay them compensation.

The construction of the Irganai hydroelectric power plant (a branch of the “RusHydro” Joints Stock Company (JSC)) began in the 1980s and ended in 2008. After the Irganai HPP was put into operation, the local residents’ gardens with crops, houses, and farmlands were flooded. The residents of the villages in the flood zone have repeatedly held protests demanding payment of compensation.
