Kadyrov threatens officials with dismissal for their children’s ignorance of their native language
Ramzan Kadyrov has promised to dismiss Chechen officials whose children do not know their native language.
The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that in March, the Chechen Minister of Education and Science announced that all schools in the republic had begun teaching the native language using new textbooks in which the spelling rules had been changed. The innovation was announced amid complaints from teachers about frequent changes to the rules of the Chechen language.
“Children are even beginning to think in Russian. The generation that does not speak or think in Chechen has no future,” stated the leader of Chechnya as quoted by the “Chechnya Segodnya” (Chechen Today) news agency.
The Chechen language is spoken mainly in Chechnya, in the Khasavyurt and Novolaksky District of Dagestan, as well as in Ingushetia and other regions of Russia, and abroad in Georgia and parts of Syria, Jordan, and Turkey. The number of people speaking the Chechen language before the military campaign in Chechnya in 1994 reached 750,000-950,000 people.
Let us remind you that in November 2022, Ramzan Kadyrov announced that the Chechen language was in the group of endangered languages. According to the leader of Chechnya, that is a “great tragedy” that the authorities of the republic cannot put up with. “In families, the native language should be the main language of communication,” stated Ramzan Kadyrov. Meanwhile, users of the “VKontakte” social network have objected that residents of Chechnya speak the Chechen language fluently and that the demands voiced by the leader of the republic are excessive.
