Relatives of resident of Ingushetia urge him to surrender to law enforcers

Relatives of Zelimkhan Tsuroev, accused of publicly justifying terrorism, have asked him not to let his family down, but to return home and surrender to law enforcers. Tsuroev, who was under recognizance not to leave the place, testified during the investigation about the wanted men, Amirkhan Gurazhev and Adam Ozdoev and after a while ran away from home, a Telegram channel associated with law enforcers has informed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on March 24, 2023, an attack was committed on a road-and-patrol service (DPS) post located near the Ingush-North-Ossetian border. Six residents of Ingushetia, including Amirkhan Gurazhev and Adam Ozdoev, were put on the wanted list. On January 1 this year, it became known that law enforcers had detained a resident of Ingushetia, Mussa Barakhoev. Investigators believe that the 60-year-old Barakhoev had placed militants in his home, for which he received a large sum of money.

At night on March 28, 2023, during the shelling of the above DPS post, two policemen were wounded; the attackers fled. The suspected underground fighters managed to escape from law enforcers twice more, and both times law enforcers suffered losses. During the shootout in the village of Zyazikov-Yurt, three law enforcers were killed and eight others were wounded, which was the largest law enforcers' daily loss since August 2012.

Zemlimkhan Tsuroev, a resident of Sunzha, was put on the wanted list, the Telegram channel "Wanted Ingushetia" has reported. According to investigators, he had posted materials online that "glorified and justified" the activities of Osama bin Laden and "Arab mercenaries headed by the 'Imarat Kavkaz'*." Tsuroev has also "provided comprehensive information" about the wanted Gurazhev and Ozdoev and their accomplice Ganiev, who was killed on November 22, 2023. On January 24, Tsuroev disappeared in an unknown direction.

The message is accompanied by videos in which Tsuroev's relatives ask him to return home.

"Don't do anything stupid ... Be a worthy man. If you're scared, call me, contact any relative," his father says in the video.

  • Analysts treat Chechen authorities' demands for apologies as selective

Vakhid Ilyasov's apologies for the incident on a Mariupol beach were caused by the pressure of Chechen authorities, while those from Ramzan Kadyrov's retinue rarely apologize for much more serious offences, analysts have pointed out, noting that not all incidents involving natives of Chechnya committed at resorts attract attention of republic's authorities.
