SC stops persecuting Dagestani journalist Magomedov within picket case

The Supreme Court (SC) of Dagestan has considered the complaint lodged by the policeman, who had claimed that Magomed Magomedov, a deputy editor-in-chief of the "Chernovik" (Draft) outlet, had violated the requirements for holding a solo picket. The judge failed to find any signs of wrongdoing and left the policeman's complaint unsatisfied.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on January 15, 2024, policemen detained Magomed Magomedov, accusing him of violating the rules for holding a solo picket. Magomed is sure that law enforcers had plotted a provocation. He intends to seek to bring the law enforcers to justice and will continue holding his weekly solo pickets.

On January 15, Magomedov was holding a traditional solo picket in support of Abdulmumin Gadjiev, his "Chernovik" colleague. Soon an unknown person approached him and unfolded another poster in Gadjiev's support. Then, policemen detained Magomedov and drew up a protocol on him for violating picketing rules.

Magomedov has noted that he rolled up his poster immediately after he saw that the unknown man had unfolded his own one, and that only he was mentioned as the violator in the protocol, while nothing was said about the man who had provoked the incident.

  • Analysts treat Chechen authorities' demands for apologies as selective

Vakhid Ilyasov's apologies for the incident on a Mariupol beach were caused by the pressure of Chechen authorities, while those from Ramzan Kadyrov's retinue rarely apologize for much more serious offences, analysts have pointed out, noting that not all incidents involving natives of Chechnya committed at resorts attract attention of republic's authorities.
