In Nalchik, Circassians commemorate Caucasian War victims

On the occasion of the 160th anniversary of the end of the Caucasian War, residents of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR) have gathered at the Tree of Life monument to commemorate the victims thereof. They have stated that they try to come there every year to pay tribute to the memory of those who died for the independence of the Circassian people.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 20 and 21, 2023, KBR authorities banned any actions in memory of the victims of the Caucasian War, threatening with liability for violating the ban.

Circassians (Adygs) is the general name of the people living in Russia and abroad, divided into Kabardians, Circassians, and Adygeis. May 21 is marked annually as the Adygs' Remembrance Day.

About a hundred residents of Nalchik and other KBR settlements gathered for the action. Folk groups performed ancient songs.

Ruslan Babugoev, a resident of Chegem, said that he came to the event in memory of his ancestors who gave their lives defending their identity and customs.

Khusein Gugov, a resident of the city of Baksan, comes to commemoration events every year. "We come to commemorate our ancestors who perished in that war," he said.
