Maria Smelaya, who ran away from her Chechen husband, asks rights defenders to return her son to her

After complaints of domestic violence in the family of a native of Chechnya and a subsequent refutation, Maria Smelaya, a Krasnodar resident, has again turned to human rights defenders, claiming that her husband had forcibly taken away her 1.5 year old child.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 9, the human rights project "Caucasus without Mother" reported that Maria Smelaya, who had complained of violence from her husband, a native of Chechnya, stopped communicating after her husband with accomplices abducted her along with her child from a shelter. A few days later, Smelaya recorded a video, in which she denied the information that her husband had beaten her up.

Earlier, Maria Smelaya asked human rights defenders to protect her from her husband, who, according to her story, used to beat her up, took her to the forest and threatened her with violence when she was pregnant.

According to Maria's girlfriend, her husband had found another wife. Having learned about this, Maria wanted to leave, but her husband, acting jointly with his new wife, took the child away from Maria.

"I haven't eaten for two days, I don't sleep, people see my condition ... if he doesn't return the child to me, I don't want to live on," Maria has declared.

  • Analysts treat Chechen authorities' demands for apologies as selective

Vakhid Ilyasov's apologies for the incident on a Mariupol beach were caused by the pressure of Chechen authorities, while those from Ramzan Kadyrov's retinue rarely apologize for much more serious offences, analysts have pointed out, noting that not all incidents involving natives of Chechnya committed at resorts attract attention of republic's authorities.
