ECtHR finds violation of rights of activists from Southern Russia

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has found unlawful the detention of activists at protest actions held in Rostov-on-Don, Sochi, Anapa and Stavropol.

The ECtHR has awarded compensation of EUR 4000 to the 88-year-old activist, Lydia Olshanskaya, from Rostov-on-Don. She was detained at a rally in support of Alexei Navalny held back in January 2021 and fined under the "rally" article.

The ECtHR has also upheld the complaint lodged by Sergey Dubovik from Stavropol, who was detained at a picket against censorship on March 6, 2022, and was fined. The ECtHR declared his detention illegal and pointed out the court bias. The ECtHR has ordered to pay compensation to Dubovik of EUR 4000.

The ECtHR has also stated a violation of the rights of two female activists from the Krasnodar Territory. Thus, the ECtHR has awarded compensation to Anastasia Titova from Sochi in the amount of EUR 3500. She was detained in June 2017 for posting an announcement of an anti-corruption march and was subsequently fined. The ECtHR has also awarded compensation of EUR 4000 to Olga Malishevskaya, an Anapa resident, who was fined in 2021 for participating in a rally in support of Alexei Navalny.
