Alley of memory for perished journalists opened in Makhachkala

The journalists community of Dagestan has long sought to open a monument in Makhachkala to pay tribute to media workers who perished while performing their professional duties.

Back in 2018, participants in the evening of memory for perished journalists in Makhachkala pointed out the need to erect a monument to media workers who were killed while performing their professional duties.

Earlier, a monument to the perished journalists has been planned to be erected next to the House of Press. Ali Kamalov, the chair of the Union of Journalists of Dagestan, reported that officials had allocated the above-mentioned land plot for a parking lot of a multifunctional centre. Construction work began at the place, and journalists demanded to stop them.

On January 22, a new public space was opened in Makhachkala: a park called the Alley of Memory of the Perished Journalists, Makhachkala Mayor Yusup Umavov reported on his Telegram channel.

In memory of the perished journalists, trees with the memorial plates holding their names will be planted at this location,Makhachkala Mayor Yusup Umavov added.

Let us remind you that twenty journalists were killed in Dagestan over twenty years, but a sentence was pronounced in one criminal case only. Among the perished journalists was Akhmednabi Akhmednabiev, a correspondent of the Caucasian Knot, who was killed in the suburbs of Makhachkala on July 9, 2013.
