Tbilisi activists welcome expected sanctions against propagandists
The Director General and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Public Broadcaster were included into the draft of the new sanctions list thanks to Tbilisi protesters, activists believe.
On February 12, on the 77th day of continuous protests in Tbilisi, demonstrators again blocked Rustaveli Avenue, demanding new parliamentary elections and the release of political prisoners.
They welcomed the fact that Tinatin Berdzenishvili, Director General of the state TV Company, and Vasil Maglaperidze, the Chairman of the Company’s Board of Trustees were included into the draft of the new European sanctions list.
"This is a proof that continuous and consistent protests yield results ... It is important to preserve this consistency, so we’ll achieve even greater results," the “Pirveli” TV Company has quoted a protester as saying.
The names of Berdzenishvili and Maglaperidze, along with the names of other figures and businessmen close to Bidzina Ivanishvili, the founder of the “Georgian Dream” Party, are in the draft resolution "On Deterioration of Political Situation in Georgia".
The list to be considered by the European Parliament includes those who had been earlier sanctioned by the United States, but it is larger than the American one. The document also suggests imposing sanctions against the heads of three pro-government propaganda TV channels "for spreading disinformation and manipulating the public discourse to support the authoritarian rule of the ruling party," the “Formula” TV has added.
