Anar Mamedli left in custody despite defence's arguments
A court in Baku has refused to release Anar Mamedli from custody, despite the advocate's arguments about the human rights activist's health problems.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Anar Mamedli, the head of the Election Monitoring and Democracy Studies Centre (EMDSC), is one of the founders of the "Fair Environment Initiative-COP29", which was established in February 2024 by five Azerbaijani NGOs. He was arrested on charges of smuggling within the case of “Abzas Media” journalists. On February 15, the court extended his arrest until May 26.
The Mamedli's health condition is deteriorating at the SIZO (pre-trial prison), his advocate said in October 2024. The Office of the Azeri Ombudsperson reported that Mamedli was examined at the SIZO, but his defence insisted on examination in a private clinic.
Despite numerous requests, Mamedli is not provided with "the adequate medical care," Djavad Djavadov, his advocate, has stated.
"Anar said that he has complications of his diseases ... He regularly experiences severe dizziness," the advocate has explained.
