Baku court sentences journalist Orudjov to two years of imprisonment in penal colony
In Baku, a court sentenced Aziz Orudjov, the head of the “Kanal-13” online TV Channel, to imprisonment, finding him guilty of illegal construction. The journalist has claimed that he is not guilty.
Aziz Orudjov, the head of the “Kanal-13” online TV Channel, has been under arrest since November 2023. Aziz Orudjov and his TV Channel’s employee Shamo Eminov were accused of foreign currency smuggling, but did not admit their guilt. Following the preliminary investigation, the foreign currency smuggling charge against Aziz Orudjov was dropped, with the charge of illegal construction still left.
“Aziz Orudjov stated that he purchased a land plot under a notarized agreement with the seller of the land plot and then began to build a house on it,” advocate Bakhruz Bayramov explained.
“The Aziz Orudjov’s guilt has not been proven ... An official could not clearly explain what damage Aziz Orudjov had caused to the state. The official only said that ‘those are state lands’,” Bakhruz Bayramov stated.
