In Nalchik, twin brothers sentenced to colony for evading military service
The twin brothers had signed a contract on the same day and served in the same detachment of the same military unit; they failed to show up for service from vacation without good reason during the mobilization period and were sentenced to five years in a penal colony each.
The tightening of legislation after the mobilization announcement has led to harsher sentences for absence from one’s military unit or desertion, human rights defenders assert.
On July 5, 2024, the Karaush brothers failed to appear for mobilization from vacation without good reason; from July 5 to December 4, 2024, they spent their time at their own discretion and evaded their military service, the press service of the Nalchik Garrison Military Court has reported in its page on the “VKontakte” social network.
On December 4, 2024, the brothers voluntarily arrived at the military investigating division.
The "Caucasian Knot" has also reported that on March 4 this year, a court in Nalchik sentenced Astemir Teshev, a military serviceman, to three years in jail, finding him guilty of leaving his unit without permission.
