Georgian journalist Amaglobeli fined for insulting policeman

A judge has obliged Mziya Amaglobeli, the founder of “Batumelebi” and “Netgazeti” outlets, to pay a fine within an administrative case of insulting a police officer. At the hearing on the criminal case of the attack on the police officer, the journalist's defence demanded to challenge the judge, but the motion was dismissed.

On March 4, the Batumi City Court extended Amaglobeli's arrest within the case of attacking the Batumi police chief. The court found most of the defence's arguments inadmissible, including witnesses’ testimonies and video records. Amaglobeli denied her guilt in insulting policemen and called the detention protocol falsified.

On January 12, 2025, 10 persons were detained in Batumi, including Mziya Amaglobeli. The reason for her detention was a poster calling for a general strike, which she had pasted on the wall. When Amaglobeli was released, she found herself in a crush, where an incident happened involving Irakli Dgebuadze, the Batumi police chief. After that, the journalist was detained again for attacking a law enforcer.

The judge has fined Amaglobeli by 2000 laris (about USD 720), the “Batumelebi” has informed. She herself compared what was happening to Stalin's repressions.
