Inscription "Navalny" turns into criminal case against Stavropol schoolgirl

An underage pupil of a Stavropol school has become a defendant in a criminal case of vandalism after being detained on the anniversary of Alexei Navalny's death.

On February 16, 2024, Navalny died in colony. Russian townspeople, including those in Southern Russia, have been persecuted for attempting to lay flowers in memory of Navalny at memorials to victims of political repressions.

As reported by the human rights project "OVD-Info"*, according to the suspect's father, the girl was detained by law enforcers on February 16. Later that day, she was released, but the police conducted a search of the house where the family lives, confiscating the girl's phone.

The reason for initiating a criminal case was the inscription "Navalny" on a bus stop. The criminal case was opened under the article on vandalism. The maximum punishment under this article, if there is a motive of political or ideological hatred and enmity, is three years of freedom deprivation.
