Supporters of European integration demand Georgia’s return to democracy

In Tbilisi, the activists seeking Georgia’s return to the path of European integration have been holding protest actions for the 115th day in a row. They have expressed their support for the US bill on sanctions against the Georgian leaders.

On March 7, the hundredth day of protests in Georgia, their participants declared that they were ready to fight until the authorities meet their demands. According to the human rights defenders’ information, at least 626 people were persecuted for participating in the protest actions.

According to the calculations run by the “Caucasian Knot” and based on the information from the Georgian media, protest actions on Rustaveli Avenue take place every day.

In Tbilisi, several hundred people on Mardjanishvili Square have expressed their support for the MEGOBARI Act, which is being considered in the US Senate. In their hands, rally participants were holding portraits of Donald Trump and US Congressman Joe Wilson, an initiator of the MEGOBARI Act, as well as US Senator Jim Risch, who presented the initiative to the upper house of the US Congress. Some protesters brought posters calling for sanctions against the leaders of the ruling “Georgian Dream” Party, the “NewsGeorgia” portal reports.

US lawmakers initiated the MEGOBARI Act in response to the decline of democracy in Georgia. The MEGOBARI Act proposes the introduction of large-scale sanctions against the Georgian leaders. At the same time, the MEGOBARI Act suggests the liberalization of the visa regime between the United States and Georgia and the expansion of economic cooperation if the Georgian authorities return to the path of democracy and abandon anti-Western rhetoric.

MEGOBARI is an abbreviation. In Georgian, this word means “friendly.” The “Georgian Dream” Party has expressed its extremely negative attitude towards the MEGOBARI Act.
