On 16th day of his hunger strike, Azerbaijani politician Tofig Yagublu is unable to walk
Tofig Yagublu, an Azeri oppositional politician, was unable to walk on his own on the 16th day of his hunger strike hr holds at the SIZO (pre-trial prison) and was taken to a meeting with his advocate in an electric car. During his hunger strike, Tofig has lost 10 kg of his body weight.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 1, Yagublu declared an endless hunger strike in protest against the guilty verdict. His health condition worsened as he refused to eat.
Tofig Yagublu is a member of the Coordinating Centre of the National Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF) and the “Musavat” Party. On March 10, the court sentenced him to 9 years in prison for fraud and document forgery. Yagublu stated that his persecution was politically motivated.
"He is so weak that he can no longer move without help ... He is losing weight more and more," said Fakhraddin Mekhtiev, his advocate, who added that despite his poor health condition, Tofig remains in good spirits.
Nigyar Khazi, Tofig’s daughter, has expressed concern for her father's health. "If something happens to my father, the Azerbaijani authorities will be held responsible for it," she has stated.
As noted by Adil Geibulla, a doctor, apart from serious health problems, there are potential risks to the life of the 65-year-old Yagublu from a hunger strike.
Tofig Yagublu has earlier held hunger strikes in custody.
