Absence of Adam Kadyrov’s official appointment to new post underscores nepotism in Chechnya

Adam Kadyrov, the 17-year-old son of the head of Chechnya, was mentioned in the position of Secretary of the Security Council, although there was no official announcement of the appointment. The appointments of Ramzan Kadyrov's children, in particular Adam, who cannot officially hold this post, are a "family matter," human rights defenders have noted.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Adam Kadyrov became the curator of the Chechen Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA). On March 27, 2025, it became known that Adam Kadyrov was awarded the medal "For Battle Honours". The award was made possible due to the arbitrary interpretation of Adam Kadyrov’s merits by the leadership of the “Rosgvardiya” (Russian National Guard), analysts have stated.

Ruslan Kutaev, a political analyst, believes that the position of Secretary of the Security Council is only temporary for Adam Kadyrov. "In any case, when Adam Kadyrov turns 18, a post will be prepared for him. I predict that it will be the post of deputy prime minister, and then prime minister," Mr Kutaev has stated.

Svetlana Gannushkina*, the Chair of the “Civic Assistance” Committee*, has indicated that Adam Kadyrov could be named Secretary of the Security Council, even if there was no official appointment.
