Human rights defenders appeal to the Georgia’s CC in connection with foreign agents law
The Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association (GYLA) has filed an application to the coutry’s Constitutional Court (CC) demanding that the Law on Registration of Foreign Agents be declared invalid and that the relevant articles of the law be suspended.
Human rights defenders have appealed to the CC against the Law on Registration of Foreign Agents.
"We don’t expect the CC to act quickly and in accordance with the Constitution, but we believe that we must use every form of legal struggle," the "News Georgia" Agency has quoted an excerpt from the GYLA's statement.
On May 15, the GYLA, jointly with the Studio Monitor and the Georgian News, submitted their application to the CC demanding that the Law on Registration of Foreign Agents be declared invalid and that the relevant articles thereof be suspended until the dispute is resolved. This was reported in the page of the GYLA in the Facebook* today. The constitutional complaint claims that, apart from unclear provisions, the entities implementing the law (the Anti-Corruption Bureau, the Prosecutor's Office and the courts) have been granted unbalanced powers, which increases the risks of arbitrary application of the law. The provisions of the law promoted by the “Georgian Dream” Party are so vague that they create a real danger that it will be used to suppress and punish independent organizations and individuals, the report says.
