Georgian oppositionists demand inquiry into attack on Gegeliya
The opposition coalition "Lelo-Strong Georgia" has demanded from the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) to investigate the beating up of Grigol Gegeliya and punish the attacker.
Grigol Gegeliya, one of the leaders of the opposition party "Lelo" was attacked on May 24 near his home in Tbilisi. The man, who, according to Gegeliya, had been driving behind him and filming on his phone, hit him on the head several times, insulted him and spat at him. Gegeliya called an ambulance, and doctors provided him with assistance on the spot.
The "Lelo-Strong Georgia" coalition has called on the Georgian MIA to investigate the attack on Grigol Gegeliya and punish the attacker. The opposition has added that Gegeliya is the coalition’s secretary for foreign affairs.
"Full responsibility for the attack on the politician is on the ‘Georgian Dream’ Party, as a force inciting hatred towards its political opponents," the “Georgia Online” has quoted the coalition's statement.
Badri Djaparidze, one of the leaders of the “Lelo-Strong Georgia”, believes that the attack was pre-planned. "Responsibility for this planned act of violence lies, of course, with the ‘Georgian Dream’ Party and supporters thereof," the “Interpressnews” quotes him as saying.
As of the morning on May 25, the Georgian MIA had not announced the start of inquiry into the incident in its website.
