Two natives of Chechnya extradited from Austria

The authorities of Austria have extradited to Russia two natives of Chechnya who requested asylum and complained about forced mobilization.

Austria has extradited two natives of Chechnya to Russia, citing the fact that the extradited persons pose a threat to national security of the country.

The two men applied for asylum, stating that they face forced mobilization in Russia. However, the authorities of Austria made the decision to extradite them. The men were deported, the “Le Monde” French newspaper reported on May 26.

The government of Austria states that the applicants are too old to be subject to military conscription, which applies to men between the ages of 18 and 30. Furthermore, the extradition order also states that the men can evade conscription in Russia by “settling in Moscow,” the “Le Monde” French newspaper reported on May 26.

The Austrian government believes that the presence of the natives of Chechnya in the country “undoubtedly threatens national security.” This opinion has been formed based on “the results of a police investigation into a case on terrorism” and religious extremism. It is also noted that such asylum seekers “can rarely afford to pay a lawyer.”

The “Le Monde” French newspaper notes that after the murder of teacher Samuel Paty in France, a special police group was created in Austria to monitor the behaviour of natives of Chechnya in the country.
