Reprimands of drivers highlight selective enforcement of laws in Chechnya

Law enforcers publicly reprimanded teenage drivers from the Gudermes District of Chechnya for violating traffic rules. Social media users have recalled that Adam Kadyrov, a son of the leader of Chechnya, drives a car, although he is also under 18.

Two videos with the law enforcers reprimanding drivers in the Gudermes District of Chechnya have been posted in the “ChP Grozny 95” public account on Instagram*. In the first video recording, the law enforcers are talking to a young man who, as follows from the video, violated traffic rules in the evening by weaving with his car along the road. In the other video recording, the law enforcers are holding a preventive conversation with three teenagers. As follows from the video, the teenagers got into their cars and quickly drove away, with a young man wearing a school graduate ribbon watching them go. Both video recordings are accompanied by the same description about the inadmissibility of violating traffic rules. The law enforcers’ words cannot be heard in the video recordings, but at the end of both videos, the young people pronounce short phrases in the Chechen language.

In the “ChP Grozny 95” public account on Instagram*, which has 632,000 subscribers, the first post garnered 61 comments by 1:32 p.m. Moscow time, and the second post got 69 comments.

In their comments, social media users have noted that the three young people are school graduates. Some users of the social networking service suggest that similar violations also take place in the family of the leader of the republic.

“When will you bring Adam Kadyrov to responsibility for driving without a driver’s license? Is the law only for ordinary people?” asked user chechnya_groz007.

“The kid may drive at 17, but these teenagers are banned from driving. I agree that they are wrong and violate the law, but those who came up with the laws are the ones who violate them,” supported user dockerschow.

“It’s just funny,” commented user p.n.h.0.
