Residents of two emergency dormitories in Yerevan, who are unable to be resettled, demanded a meeting with the Prime Minister of Armenia at a protest action in front of the government today.
As "Kavkazsky Uzel" wrote, in March, residents of an emergency dormitory in the Vardashen quarter held two protest actions in front of the Yerevan City Hall, demanding that they be provided with new housing.
Residents of two dormitories in Vardashen NN 68a and 66/1 held a protest action today in front of the Armenian government building. They are demanding a meeting with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, the Novosti Armenia agency reported.
"More than two hundred residents - elderly people, people with disabilities, minors - live under the threat of an emergency. The mayor's office appeals to the government, the government appeals to the mayor's office, but the problem has not yet been resolved. Moreover, the cracks in the building are growing, the sewage system is out of order, and wastewater is flowing into the apartments," said former member of the Yerevan Council of Elders Sona Aghekyan, who participated in the action.
The dormitory buildings located in the Vardashen quarter of Yerevan are at risk of collapse. This was stated during a protest action near the Armenian Government building on July 17 by residents of the aforementioned dormitories, News.Am reported.
“I live on the first floor, our building is collapsing from below, we have a constant musty smell, there are cracks. I am sick, I have a third-degree disability, I do not work anywhere. We have contacted the municipality many times, submitted applications, but they laugh at us. They come during elections, promise to solve problems, but as soon as they are elected, they forget everything,” said an elderly participant in the protest.
Another resident of Vardashen noted that more collapses are expected. “Right now, equipment is working, a tractor has arrived, we need to dig up three floors to lay a pipe. And the building is shaking a lot because of this,” he said.
There are 182 families living in emergency houses, including children, the elderly and the disabled. Many of them have developed chronic diseases due to constant exposure to damp conditions, the publication says.
The protesters warn that if their problem is not resolved soon, then next time they will come to the government building and pitch a tent city.
