North Ossetian resident stripped of citizenship for evading military registration

A 22-year-old resident of North Ossetia who failed to register for military service has been stripped of his Russian citizenship. This is the first decision to terminate citizenship made in the republic.

As "Kavkazsky Uzel" reported, on June 16 it became known that a 39-year-old resident of Kamyshin was stripped of his Russian citizenship because he failed to register for military service in a timely manner. In October 2024, two residents of the Volgograd Region were stripped of their Russian citizenship for refusing to register for military service. The threat of deprivation of citizenship is often used to push naturalized citizens to visit the military registration and enlistment office and sign a contract, lawyers said.

The first case of deprivation of Russian citizenship in North Ossetia was reported today by the republic's Ministry of Internal Affairs. The department noted that they are actively checking all naturalized citizens of Russia for initial registration for military service together with military registration and enlistment office employees.

A 22-year-old citizen of a “neighboring state” acquired Russian citizenship in August 2024. Having received a Russian passport, he did not appear at the military registration and enlistment office at his place of residence within two weeks and did not submit an application for military registration through the government services website within a week, according to a message on the department’s official Telegram channel.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, refusing to register for military service after acquiring citizenship is regarded as a violation of the oath, which contains an obligation to comply with the laws of the Russian Federation. In this case, it is considered that the person has provided “deliberately false information” regarding this obligation, which entails the termination of citizenship.

The young man, who was deprived of citizenship, “according to available information, returned to his homeland,” the department noted.

“Kavkazsky Uzel” also wrote that naturalized citizens are periodically deprived of Russian citizenship under the pretext of a security threat. Thus, a native of one of the South Asian countries in the Rostov region was deprived of citizenship not only for evading military registration, but also because of calls for violence against representatives of other faiths and criticism of Russian legislation. Also, due to the security threat, the head of the Azerbaijani diaspora in the Moscow region Elshan Ibragimov, blogger Subkhan Mamedov and Azerbaijani athlete Javid Rzayev were deprived of citizenship.
