European Court finds Russia guilty of kidnapping four Chechen residents

Today, the European Court for Human Rights has passed decisions on three cases of four residents of Chechnya, where Russia has been found guilty of breaching several articles of the Convention on Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, namely, the right to life, right to liberty and personal immunity, prohibition of torture and inhumane treatment, and the right to legal assistance.

The total compensation of moral and material damage in three cases makes 175,000 euros.

The applicants in the cases "Musaev versus Russia" and "Umarov versus Russia" were represented by lawyers of the Human Rights Centre "Memorial" (Moscow) with assistance of the European Human Rights Defence Centre (London). The woman-applicant in the case "Akhiyadova versus Russia" was represented by lawyers from the organization named "The Legal Initiative for Russia" (Moscow).
