Most complaints against Russia in the Strasbourg Court are on events in Chechnya

The report of the European Court for Human Rights published on January 23 notes that last year the Court revealed 175 facts of human rights violations in Russia. Most of the complaints filed to the Strasbourg Court by Russian citizens were related to events in Chechnya.

Thus, on the outcomes of 2007 Russia was ranked second among European countries by the number of verdicts passed against it by the European Court for Human Rights, Radio Liberty reports. The leader by the number of human rights violations recognized as such by the European Court was Turkey.

As to the number of complaints lodged in 2007 to the Strasbourg Court, Russia is in the lead. In total, as of today, the Court has 80,000 cases awaiting consideration. Out of this stock, 26% (about 20,000 cases) are against Russia. The runner-up is Turkey (12%), followed by Romania (10%), the RIA "Novosti" reports.

By the number of the decisions passed by the Court last year, Turkey is in the lead (331 verdicts), Russia being the runner-up (192), followed by Poland (111) and Ukraine (109). In total, in 2007 the Court passed 1503 decisions.
