In Armenia, Ombudsman finds it necessary to early release journalist Babadzhanyan

Today, Armen Arutyunyan, Ombudsman of Armenia, made a statement, in which he has expressed expediency of early release of Armand Babadzhanyan, editor-in-chief of the "Zhamanak-Yerevan" newspaper.

"In view of the facts that Babadzhanyan was never trialled before, no civil suit was lodged against him, and also with regards of the public resonance of the case and statements of authoritative international human rights and journalists' organizations, I think it expedient to apply the conditional early relief to Armand Babadzhanyan," said Arutyunyan, noting that in the near future the independent commission on considering early release or more lenient punishment will consider Babadzanyan's case under the petition lodged by the criminal corrective establishment "Convicts' Hospital".
