Another local disappears in Kabardino-Balkaria
The Kabardino-Balkarian human rights centre was approached by Lydia Zhangurazova, a resident of Verkhniaya Zhemtala village, Cherek District, Kabardino-Balkaria, who said that her son Islam Zhangurazov, 23, went for his evening pray to the mosque on Sunday, December 20, but never reached the mosque.
Ms Zhangurazova wrote in her applications addressed to Boris Zumakulov, Ombudsman of Kabardino-Balkaria, Pshikan Taov, a member of the Public Chamber and other officials with reference to eyewitnesses that some unidentified persons drove up to her son in a car without identification number plates. What happened then - nobody knows.
According to the mother, her son was a fourth-year student of the Kabardino-Balkarian State University (KBSU), and "nobody could say a bad word about him." She also asserts that he had nothing to do with religious extremists; he was even afraid of them.
The parents have addressed law enforcement bodies, but, under the law, a missing person can be announced into search only three days after the disappearance.
Valery Khatazhukov, head of the public human rights centre, has expressed, in his interview to the "Caucasian Knot", his concern of recent frequent disappearances. "We shouldn't admit the situation in our republic to aggravate to the extent of Ingushetia and Dagestan," he said.
"Khatazhukov: extrajudicial executions on the rise in Kabardino-Balkaria", "Protest action held in Kabardino-Balkaria after disappearance of three persons," "Three residents of Kabardino-Balkaria disappear," "AI: situation in Northern Caucasus remains instable."

Law enforcers' provocations put gays in Dagestan under additional threat
Gays in Dagestan were in danger even before law enforcers held provocations and raids on them; and after the arrest of the gay blogger Matvei Volodin, threats have grown manifold. However, as noted by rights defenders, law enforcers have no real grounds to open cases against gays under the article on extremism.
