Sportswoman from Krasnodar Territory wins gold at World Championships in Athletics

Maria Abakumova, a resident of the Krasnodar Territory, has won the gold medal in javelin throw at the World Championships in Athletics, held in the South-Korean city of Daegu.

Maria won the Russia's fifth gold at the Championships by defeating Olympic Champion Barbora Spotakova of the Czech Republic with a result of 71.99 meters – a new Russian and Championships record.

The Governor of the Krasnodar Territory Alexander Tkachov has congratulated Maria Abakumova on behalf of all Kuban residents, the RIA "Novosti" reports.

"This day will go down into history of the national track and field for a long time.

Two Russian records, the Championships record and the best season result in the world – all this stands behind the figures of 71 meters and 99 centimetres.

However, not everyone knows how much labour, daily workouts and dozens of competitions are also behind them. Therefore, this gold medal, won in a bitter struggle with the strongest global rivals, is doubly valuable," runs the Governor's congratulatory cable.
