Yerevan hosts rally in support of Lake Sevan

Today, Armenian ecologists held a picket in front of the residence of the President of Armenia; they urged to save Lake Sevan. The rally was organized at the initiative of the organization "Ecolur".

The participants of the rally protested against activity of the Company "GeoProMining Gold". According to their information, the Company has avoided the Law "On Lake Sevan" and built in the lake basin, in Sotska, rock-crushing and screening plant to process gold.

The ecologists assert that the new workshop increases the risk of pollution of Lake Sevan, since different heavy and toxic elements and arsenic contained in the rocks get into the lake.

Members of the initiative "SOS Sevan" appealed to the Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan, demanding to suspend the activities of mining companies in the lake basin and inspect whether these activities comply with the legislation, the "Armenia Today" reports.

Meanwhile, according to the Company "GeoProMining Gold", rock-crushing and screening plant (RCSP) at the Sotska minefield has been installed and is being operated in full compliance with the legislation of Armenia.

In April, at the request of the government office of Armenia, the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of the country has established a committee which reviewed the documentation of the Company "GeoProMining Gold" with respect to the legality of its activities on the RCSP's operation and confirmed the legitimacy of the Company's activities, the "ARKA" reports.
