Oppositionist Elshan Gasanov released from prison in Azerbaijan

Today Garadag district court of Baku brought a judgment to release member of “Musavat” party Alshen Gasanov on parole. This was reported by Deputy Chairman of “Musavat” Giulaga Asanly.

Gasanov was arrested in connection with the meeting of April, 2, 2011. In August, 2011, the oppositionist was sentenced to two years of custody on accusation of violating public order. Later the Appellate Court of Baku reduced his penalty to one year of custody.

”The court brought a judgment of Elshan Gasanov’s release on parole for the reason that he had served over half of his penalty term, Asanly explained to the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent.

“Recently during monitoring in colony No 14 I met Gasanov who had problems with his health caused by hepatitis “C”, human rights activist Einulla Fatullaev said.

The human rights activist greeted the convict’s early release and expressed a hope for “rapid release of all the prisoners of conscience convicted in connection with the meeting of April, 2, and other political prisoners”.
