Human rights activists object to monument to Geidar Aliyev in Kiev

The Shield human rights organization applied to the Kiev city administration asking to prohibit from erecting a monument to the late Azerbaijan president, Geidar Aliyev, in the Ukrainian capital.

Activists of the organization hold that Aliyev persecuted Soviet dissidents and Azerbaijan democrats when being Azerbaijan KGB (State Security Committee) chief and a member of the Political Bureau of the Soviet Communist Party. To build a monument to him in Ukraine is a "shameful and foolish" undertaking.

The correspondent has been informed at the Azerbaijan Embassy to Ukraine that the Kiev authorities permitted to erect the monument to Aliyev in a park on Glubochitskaya Street. It will be unveiled on May 10, Geidar Aliyev's birthday.
