Journalist Alexander Cherkasov heads the Board of HRC "Memorial"
Oleg Orlov, Chairman of the Board of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial", left his position; journalist Alexander Cherkasov, an activist of the organization since 1989, became the new head of the Board.
According to the website of the HRC "Memorial", starting from 1994, the main work of Alexander Cherkasov was concentrated in areas of armed conflict in Northern Caucasus North Ossetia, Ingushetia, Chechnya, Dagestan, and other regions of the Caucasus. In particular, on February 13, Moscow hosted the presentation of the first volume of his book about disappeared and murdered residents of Chechnya. Alexander Cherkasov is the member of the Board of the International historical and educational, charitable and human rights organization "Memorial", which includes the Human Rights Centre.
Oleg Orlov, who had been the leader of the Human Rights Centre during 15 years, supported the candidacy of Alexander Cherkasov, the "Ekho Moskvy" (Echo of Moscow) reports.
Oleg Orlov himself, having quitted the position of the head of the Human Rights Centre, will remain the member of the HRC "Memorial" Board and will be the leader of the programme "Hot Spots".
"I believe that rotation should take place. It is impossible that the HRC 'Memorial' will be headed by the same man during 15 years," the "Interfax" quotes Oleg Orlov as saying.
