Azerbaijan: court dismissed complaint against extension of arrest of "Nida" activist Mamed Azizov

Today, the court has dismissed the appeal against the two-month extension of the arrest of Mamed Azizov, a civil activist of the movement "Nida" (Shout), accused of drug possession.

The today's hearing on the complaint at the Baku Court of Appeal was held with participation of Azizov, his lawyer Fariz Namazly told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

According to Namazly, Azizov has again rejected the charges against him and said that he was being persecuted for political reasons. Let us remind you that within a month, apart from Azizov, six other activists of the "Nida" had been arrested in Azerbaijan.

The lawyer Namazly had petitioned to satisfy the appeal and substitute the arrest for some other preventive measure that is not related to custody. "Keeping Azizov behind bars is not justified. Anyway, no investigatory actions against him are carried out," said the lawyer.

Namazly also announced that he had filed a request for re-interrogation of the defendant.
