Court sides with prisoner in her dispute with Volgograd SIZO
A court awarded convicted Elena Polovenko compensation of 4000 roubles, thus granting her claim against the administration of a SIZO (pre-trial prison) in Volgograd. Elena Polovenko complained about the poor conditions in a SIZO cell and demanded compensation of 570,000 roubles.
Elena Polovenko, convicted in a drug case, complained that during her stay in the Volgograd SIZO, there was no partition in the cell separating a WC from the rest of the room. Because of the above, prisoners had to use the toilet in front of their cellmates.
Elena Polovenko also complained that the cell was overcrowded and there was an unpleasant smell from the sewer, the official website of the Central District Court of Volgograd reported.
The ”Caucasian Knot” has also reported that former prisoner Andrei Samoshin succeeded in seeking compensation from the administration of the Volgograd SIZO for violation of his rights. The man complained about the inadequate conditions at a SIZO cell. Andrei Samoshin requested compensation of 500,000 roubles, but the court reduced the amount to 1000 roubles.
