In Azerbaijan, Court leaves Uzeir Mamedli, activist of "Nida", in custody
Today, the Nasimi District Court of Baku dismissed the motion filed by advocates of Uzeir Mamedli, an activist of the movement "Nida", to change the pre-trial restriction measure to home arrest and left the young man in custody. The defence intends to challenge the decision at the Court of Appeal.
Consideration of the motion to change the pre-trial restriction measure to home arrest was brought to Elman Akhmedov, Judge of the Nasimi District Court. This was told to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by Fakhraddin Mekhtiev, the advocate of Uzeir Mamedli.
However, according to his story, the defence waived the Judge, since he had earlier made the decision to arrest Uzeir Mamedli. "The withdrawal has been granted, and the case was transferred to another Judge Ikram Shirinov," the advocate has explained.
In his opinion, the Judge "formally reacted to the consideration of the motion." "The court session lasted only several minutes. The Judge went to the deliberation room, came back and pronounced the dismissal of the motion. We believe this is a politically motivated decision," Fakhraddin Mekhtiev has stated. He has noted that there is no need to leave his client in custody, "since no investigatory actions are carried out."
The advocate has also announced his intention to challenge the court decision at the Baku Court of Appeal.
Yalchin Imanov, another advocate, is also confident in the political nature of the case against the activists of the movement "Nida". In his opinion, "the arrested activists of the movement 'Nida' are being prosecuted for their active participation in the protest actions and criticism of authorities in the social network 'Facebook'."
