Refugees in Zugdidi stop hunger strike
The refugees from Abkhazia, who held their hunger strike outside the office of the Department for Refugees in Zugdidi, have stopped their protest, having received the authorities' promise to provide housing.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 15 twenty refugees went on hunger strike in the building of the department for internally displaced persons. Their main demand was allocation of housing to them. The protesters wanted to meet the Minister for Refugees and Accommodation of Georgia David Darakhvelidze.
Today, it became known that the refugees have stopped their action, the "Georgia Online" reports.
As stated by Nuna Abshilava, who took part in the action of, their representative was received at the Ministry for Refugees. "They said that we need to suffer still a little, and we'll get housing. If they don't keep the word, we'll resume the hunger strike," the "Echo of the Caucasus" quotes her as saying.
The "Caucasian Knot" was told earlier by Eka Gulua, the head of the press service of the Ministry of Refugees and Accommodation, there are no flats in Zugdidi to be distributed among the refugees. "What we don't have - we can't distribute; however, this year we already plan to build new blocks," she said.
