Volgograd Region: defenders of historic unloading dock report suspension of its dismantling
On May 20, the group of activists defending the unloading dock in the Volgograd Region took another attempt to protect the historic structure from demolition. The opposition of the activists with people who tried to perform the demolition on that day was stopped by the police, which intend to carry out its own check. At present, the demolition of the building is suspended, the activists reports. The fate of the structure, according to Alexei Volotskov, a Deputy of the Volgograd City Duma, is currently decided by the Ministry of Sports of Russia.
For some time, the unloading dock (or a jetty that can be used as a floating river station), located at the farmyard Bobry near the city of Krasnoslobodsk, had been used as a rowing base of the Volgograd Academy of Physical Culture and is on its balance sheet. Currently, the structure is in a dilapidated condition.
As earlier reported by the "Caucasian Knot", on April 24, a group of young activists in the Volgograd Region launched a campaign demanding to abandon the plans for demolition of the old building, a river attraction sight of the region – the unloading dock. The informal youth movement was organized after announcement of the plans of the Academy to demolish the historic buildings because of impossibility to restore it. The activists set up a tent camp near the dock; and one of them, Daniel Enzhil, went on hunger strike. The demolition works were to be completed before May 20. On May 11, the activists said that they had prevented the demolition of the historic building.
