Workers of Zestafoni ferroalloy plant in Georgia are on a hunger strike
The workers of ferroalloy plant in the town of Zestafini, Georgia, are holding a strike demanding increase in wages and signing a trade union contract.
The strike started on May, 20.
According to Chairman of United Trade Union of Georgia Gocha Alexandria, the workers demand increase in wages by 50% with 20% addition for night works and signing the trade union contract negotiated by the parties this January.
“The decision to start a strike was taken for the reason that the workers got neither additional payments, nor bonuses for night fork or incentives”, Gocha Alexandria said to the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent.
He added that the metalworkers and electricians in the plant had wages of about 350 to 400 lari (about 215 to 245 US dollars), the crane operators got 600 lari and the average workers’ wage was 550 lari.
The management of the plant calls negotiation in an ultimatum-like tone unacceptable.
