In Azerbaijan, adviser to leader of "Musavat" Party detained after rally
Mustafa Gadjibeili, an adviser to the leader of the Azerbaijani "Musavat" Party, was detained after a rally on the occasion of the Day of Republic in the village of Novkhany. This was reported by Gulyagi Aslanly, Deputy Chairman of the Party.
The rally attended by about 2000 persons was held at the monument to Mamed Emin Rasulzade, one of the founders of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, located in his native village of Novkhany 20 km from Baku.
The action that was attended by supporters of the civil movement for democracy "Public Chamber", the movement "EL", the "Musavat" Party, the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), the "Classic" Popular Front, the National Democratic Party and a number of others.
Although the event was not sanctioned by the authorities, the police did not intervene in the course of the very rally. However, upon completion of the action, persons in civilian clothes detained Mustafa Gadjibeili, the adviser to the leader of the Azerbaijani "Musavat" Party, and another unidentified oppositionist and drove them away to some unknown destination. This was told to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by Gulyagi Aslanly.
Starting from 1991, Azerbaijan celebrates the day of May 28 as the Day of Republic. On May 28, 1918, the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR) was proclaimed, which became the first republic in the Muslim world. Azerbaijan declared its independence after the collapse of the Transcaucasian Democratic Federative Republic (TDFR).
