Makhachkala court puts author of anti-New Year video into custody

The Soviet District Court of Makhachkala has announced its decision to arrest for two months Murad Nurmagomedov, a resident of Makhachkala, suspected of illegal possession of weapons and an author of the popular online video criticizing the Muslim New Year celebration in Dagestan.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Murad Nurmagomedov was detained on December 31, 2014. Law enforcers claim they found ammunition during the search of Murad Nurmagomedov himself and his house. The wife of the detained man believes that the ammunition had been planted on her husband.

When commenting on the opinion voiced earlier by a Murad Nurmagomedov's friend that the detention might be related to the video record posted on the Internet, advocate Ziyavudin Uvaisov said that he could not rule out that possibility.

On December 31, 2011, the video record "Dagestanis' Attitude towards the New Year!" shot and edited by Murad Nurmagomedov was uploaded to YouTube. Up to now, the video record was watched more than 155,000 times. The video shows how well-known figures of Dagestani media, athletes, community and religious leaders urge not to celebrate the New Year holiday.
