Tenants of barrack destroyed by landslide in Sochi intend to seek inquiry into reasons of tragedy
On January 5, as a result of a landslide in the Khosta District of Sochi, a barrack, which was inhabited by 20 persons, was damaged. All the tenants were evacuated. Local authorities offered them temporary accommodation in a sanatorium, but most of them preferred to stay with their relatives.
The tenants intend to seek for an independent examination of the reasons of the tragedy and receipt of appropriate compensations. According to their version, the landslide was provoked by felling trees in 2014 and later erection of a power line. However, the company "Kubanenergo", which performed the construction work, refutes this version.
"The barrack is nearly half a century old; and there were no landslides all this time. In was only after the felling and erection of a power line support on the hillside that the landslide went down. I think that experts should clear out the reason of the landslide, find those responsible, oblige them to provide people with comfortable housing and pay compensations for suffered damage," said Nikolai Sofyanov, one of the tenants.
According to his story, residents of Iskra Street intend "to demand an independent examination of the reasons for the landslide to be conducted by geological experts; and after the reasons are established – to demand compensation of damage."
