150 thousand of Azerbaijani Orthodox believers celebrate Christmas (+video)
Today, the Orthodox Christians of Azerbaijan have celebrated Christmas. On the night of January 7 divine services were held in the catherdrals and churches of Azerbaijan.
The main festive liturgy took place in the central Temple of Myrrhbearers and was performed by the Bishop Alexander of Baku and the Caspian Sea.
The holiday services were also held in other Orthodox Churches of Baku – the Virgin’s Birth Cathedral and the Church of Michael the Archangel. Festive events took place in different regions of the country - Alexander Nevsky Church in Ganja, St. Nicholas Church in Khachmaz and Preaching-house of St Seraphim of Sarov in Sumgait.
Yesterday the Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev congratulated Orthodox Christians of Azerbaijan on the sacred holiday of Christmas.
"Christmas embodying update, harmony and well-being is every year solemnly and enthusiastically celebrated in our country by the Christian community. On this joyous day again I convey to you congratulations and wish your families happiness and prosperity," the president’s message says.
