Additional police forces brought to Russian military base in Gyumri
Today, additional law enforcers, including riot police units, have been brought to Gyumri. Police posts in the area of the Russia's Consulate General and the 102nd military base have been reinforced.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the strained situation evolved in Gyumri after the murder of the Avetisyan family on January 12, of which the Russian regular soldier Valery Permyakov is accused. On January 15, an action was held in the city demanding to give Permyakov out to the Armenian justice; it ended with riots and clashes with the police, as a result of which 14 people suffered.
Vahan Tumasyan, the head of the NGO "Shirak Centre", told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent at about 6:00 p.m. that he saw traffic of buses with power agents in the city centre near the police building.
In his turn, Levon Barsegyan, the head of the journalists' club "Asparez", has noted that police forces began pulling up to Gyumri since early morning. According to his story, about 2000 power agents were brought to – both local and brought from Ararat, Artashat and several other cities of Armenia.
Barsegyan has added that now no new protests are expected in Gyumri. He suggested that the police have decided to pull up additional forces to the city as a "safeguard" measure.
