CoA finds former head of Georgia's Military Police guilty of torture
On January 23, the Tbilisi Court of Appeal (CoA) found Megis Kardava, the ex-head of the Department of Military Police of the Georgia's Ministry of Defence (MoD) guilty of sexual assault and torture of the officer Sergo Tetradze and sentenced him in absentia to 9 years in prison.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on January 27, 2014, the Tbilisi City Court sentenced Kardava, also in absentia, to 9 years in prison on charges of torturing of the MoD officials David Londaridze and Georgy Gorelashvili; illegal deprivation of liberty of the MoD employee Georgy Chikvatiya, and of abuse of power. However, then, the court acquitted Karsava in the episode with the officers Sergo Tetradze and Sergey Chaplygin, as well as of coercion and humiliation of Georgy Chikvatiya.
"Kardava's acquittal in the episode with Sergo Tetradze was an unjustified decision of the first instance court," said Revaz Nadoi, a prosecutor.
According to his story, the CoA has changed this particular decision, the "News-Georgia" reports.
Kardava himself, who is abroad, treats the accusations against him as absurd.
