Azerbaijani MIA starts investigating attack on rights defender Gyunay Ismaylova

The attack on the lawyer of the Institute of Reporters' Freedom and Safety (IRFS) Gyunay Ismaylova is investigated under the article of "hooliganism", said Orkhan Mansurzade, the spokesman of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Azerbaijan. Ismaylova disagrees with the qualification of the incident and doubts that the case will be investigated objectively.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on January 26 Gyunay Ismaylova, a lawyer for the IRFS, reported that some unidentified attacker grabbed her by the throat and tried to punch; but she managed to call for help, and the assailant fled. For the first time, on January 27, her application was not accepted, but on January 28, the police accepted her application.

The institution of a criminal case on Ismaylova's application was announced by Orkhan Mansurzade, the head of the press service of the MIA of Azerbaijan. He stressed that the information that the police initially failed to register the application is not true.

The MIA spokesman also said about "the inadmissibility of artificial politicization of the issue."
