Chechnya, the only NCFD region with growth of number of victims in 2014
The 2014 victims of the armed conflict in Northern Caucasus have been summed up, showing a reduction of the count of victims in all regions of the North-Caucasian Federal District (NCFD), except for Chechnya.
In total for the NCFD, 525 people fell victim to the armed conflict; of them, 341 people were lost and 184 others were wounded. This marks a 46.9% decrease against 2013, when Northern Caucasus had 986 victims: 529 casualties and 457 wounded persons.
The total number of civilian losses in the NCFD in 2014 was 53: 37 killed and 16 wounded persons. In 2014, law enforcers had 221 victims: 55 were killed and 166 were wounded. The total victims among militants were 251 people, of whom 248 were killed.
In 2014, the regions of the NCFD recorded at least 25 explosions. Ten of them can be qualified as terror acts. In 2014, there were at least 147 clashes with members of the armed underground.
The above statistics gives reason to conclude that almost the entire territory of Northern Caucasus showed a trend towards the pacification of the situation; and the year 2015 has a chance to become even more successful in this regard. The data for individual regions continue the trend of recent years; with Dagestan holding the sad leadership in the number of dead and wounded. The efforts of the Ingush authorities, aimed at appeasing the conflict, result in a significant decrease in the number of dead and wounded.
However, as the practice shows, what was tested in Chechnya may be soon implemented all over the NCFD. The same applies to the militants' tactics: some of them have spun off from the "Imarat Kavkaz", which was recognized as a terrorist organization in Russia, and swore to the leaders of the terrorist "Islamic State", whose adherents have repeatedly stated their intention to spread their war to Russia.
