NATO does not recognize Russian-South-Ossetian alliance treaty
James Appathurai, NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for the South Caucasus and Central Asia, has stated that the alliance would not recognize the legitimacy of the alliance treaty signed by Russia and South Ossetia, but cannot prevent the signing thereof.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the draft treaty on alliance and integration of South Ossetia and Russia, finalized with the participation of representatives of both parties, was sent to Moscow on January 30.
According to Appathurai, the NATO refuses to recognize not only the treaty, but also the Russia's recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
"We are helping Georgia and intend in the future to increase this help at political, practical and diplomatic levels," the RIA "Novosti" quotes Appathurai as saying.
Earlier, Jens Stoltenberg, the NATO Secretary General, said that the alliance wouldn’t not recognize a similar treaty on alliance and strategic partnership signed by Russia and Abkhazia, as it treats it as a violation of Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity, the "Argumenty i Facty" reports.
