Armenian oppositionist suspends hunger strike

Head of the press service of the opposition party Anrapetutiun (Republic) Suren Sureniants, who is in pre-trial detention, suspended his hunger strike in the evening of May 25. The hunger strike had an extremely negative effect on his eyesight and he had to stop the action of protest in six days after its beginning in order to avoid further complications, the opposition leader's lawyer said.

Being on hunger strike, Suren Sureniants demanded that all political prisoners be immediately released, and some items of the [April 28] resolution of the Council of Europe's Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) on Armenia be fulfilled.

The opposition activist himself is charged with making appeals to overthrow the country's constitutional regime by force and insulting state officials.
